INTRO FOR ANDREW

Hello Andrew! I’m very much looking forward to working with you this Spring. I have put together a page with images for various projects & new ideas I am working on to bring you up to speed. Also as requested, here’s a link to my artist statement. You can also browse my past work on my site.

UPDATE FOR JOHN

John! Looking forward to working with you this semester as well! You are largely familiar with most of this from Online Critique in the Fall, but wanted to bring you up to speed on work I’ve done over the winter break.

Acrylic Paint Peels

This work from the Fall is presenting new challenges (opportunities?). Once created, these soft sculptures are supple and fresh looking. But then after some handling and exposure to the cold temps, the paint is cracking. I am experimenting with leaning into the cracks by painting the back side of the peel and the stabilizer beneath that the peels are separating from.

Image of the above sculpture when first completed a few months ago.

Photo sample from an exploratory photo shoot with soft sculptures in environments.

Silicone Bags/Garbage Bags

This is a new material for me that I am figuring out. The first image below is a purchased silicon sock that I embroidered, added wig hair and fashioned into a bag tied with a pink ribbon. The second image is a bag I created from silicone that I tinted and poured myself. I am working to eliminate the high gloss in the silicone I pour. The last image is a failed attempt at painting details onto the silicone then setting on a matte surface to eliminate shine. I am taking a “suck on it and see” approach with this sample. I am currently still experimenting with the material to get the results I want.

Bio Matters

I am including a link to a larger body of work created over last year that I have recently contextualized into a narrative I am calling “Bio Matters.” (see further descriptions included in each grouping). Below is the most recent addition to Bio Matters. This is the most resolved state of this work (see rejected in-progress iterations below). I intend to continue this work and expect it to further evolve.

New Project Ideas

Truthfully I feel I am having an idea boom on top of the several projects above I am chewing on. Recent discoveries on my work’s focus around “value” is to blame.

Used Barbie Make Me Pretty Sold at a garage sale

This is a composition I plan to develop into an oil painting. Will talk more about it when we meet.

Synthetic Heirlooms

I am interested in the use of biological material as evidence of residual value. Creating synthetic bio heirlooms such as victorian hair art made with synthetic hair and in synthetic lockets/vessels bringing attention to a bias towards things with authenticity as being valuable.

Taylor’s Flowers

Came literally in a dream where I was gifted a grouping of the dead dried flowers used in Taylor Swift’s engagement, I am interested in this idea of the value of garbage. How remnants of something with perceived value become themselves valuable. Upping the stakes is the inability to truly authenticate said valued garbage.
