Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (Mulvey)
I selected this reading for my presentation as it strongly relates to my work. I often think about the psychoanalytical forces that drive so much of our culture and lives, and how different our world would be if they didn’t exist. I think about how women today would be so different if male gaze in cinema hadn’t painted such a dazzling picture. I think about how male gaze’s contribution to cinema not only informed how women see themselves, but how trans women craft an image of the woman they aspire to be. It is this very force that put into play the fetishization of my body phenotypes. Why over 50% of women have blonde hair even though it only occurs naturally in 2% of the population, and why there is an entire industry dedicated to helping women achieve this cinematic status and standard.
