Ritual
IMAGE TRANSFER & COLOR PENCIL ON ACID FREE PAPER
Ritual and heritage anchor us. To participate in a ritual offers us a method of belonging and a way to process that which language & beliefs fail to. For those of us who were cast away from their makers, ritual acts as insurance that we may never experience abandonment again. Throughout my life I find myself looking for traditions and routines. Through them I alleviate this great anxiety of rejection. “Ritual” celebrates this practice. In the act of daily grooming, each cloth imbued with daily purpose finds reclamation from the refuse. After capturing and digitally removing the pigment collected from my face, I transfer the resulting cloth image and reapply the pigment through the ritual of careful observation. This act allows me to connect a genetic skill to my daily grooming practice anchoring me to the tangible. Through this work I control my fear of abandonment through the act of reclaiming myself.
