The Everyday (Johnston):
This past spring (of 2025) I began a series of drawings titled “Ritual”, ones that focus on an everyday action in an effort to slow my life down and take notice. After capturing and digitally removing the pigment collected from my face, I transfer the resulting cloth image and reapply the pigment using colored pencil through the ritual of careful observation. This act allows me to connect a genetic skill to my daily grooming practice anchoring me to the tangible. Through this work I control my fear of abandonment through the act of reclaiming myself in the here and now.
During GSS, I allowed my gaze outward from the tall windows taking notice of the building outlines and how the sun seemed to create an almost intentional composition that changed throughout to duration of the class. This novel new view from the window brought me peace & satisfaction for my new adventure.
